Arthur E. Hammerschmidt, 83, passed away Sunday, March 3, 2024. He was born April 11, 1940, in Brooklyn, New York to Paul August Hammerschmidt and Ethel Catherine Iser.
He is survived by wife, Ruth; children Paul (Lori), Liberty Lake, WA, Christine Bailey (Marvin), El Paso, TX and Mark, Morgan Hill, CA. Grandchildren Jolene, Mary Ann, Zachary, and Madeline and great grandchildren Joseph and Audri. Preceded in death by, sisters Mildred and Ethel (Jean) and brother Paul. Also, grandson Matthew Hammerschmidt.
After serving in the Army, Art left New York for California where he met and married his wife Ruth in December 1974. They moved to Woodinville, WA, where Art was employed by AMFAC Drug Distribution. In October 1983, he was transferred back to California where he worked until he was medically retired in early1996. Art and Ruth moved to Mesquite, NV in March1998, where they have been active in many community organizations. They volunteered with the Special Olympics and, early on, they scheduled and organized the bell ringers for The Salvation Army and continue to ring bells to this day. Art was also very active at the Mesquite Veterans Center as well as the American Legion. He was known for his patriotism and how proud he was that his father served in WWI and WWII. He has been in many Veterans Day parades, and in 2010, was presented with a plaque by the Exchange Club of Mesquite, recognizing his commitment to displaying the American flag. Art was patriotism personified. Art was also passionate about his church; he volunteered as an usher and was also a 4th Degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus.
Rosary and viewing will be held Friday, March 8th, 4:00 pm. Funeral mass will be held Saturday, March 9th, 9:30 am at La Virgen de Guadalupe Catholic Church.
In lieu of flowers the family is requesting donations in Art’s name to the Mesquite Veterans Center or the local Salvation Army.
