“If I’m not happy, who’s fault is that?”
Barbara Yurick Reed, 84, a fifteen-year resident of Mesquite, Nevada, passed away
peacefully on October 30th 2022 surrounded by loved ones in her home. Barbara was
born August 1, 1938 in Lansford, Pennsylvania, to the late Peter and Evelyn (Goetz)
Yurick.
Barbara is survived by her loving husband Fredric (Fritz) Reed whom she met through
the Pennsylvania High School State Music Program in 1954. They celebrated their
64th wedding anniversary this August. Barbara, a junior at the time, played cello for
the orchestra and Fritz, a senior, sang in the choir. Music, especially classical,
continued to play an important part in her life and brought her joy and comfort in her
final days.
After graduating from Lansford High School, Barbara went on to become Valedictorian
of the Dental Hygiene Program at University of Pennsylvania in 1958. After school she
worked as a Dental Hygienist.
Following their marriage, Barbara and Fritz called many places home, including
Birmingham, Louisville, Chicago, Lake Oswego, Oregon, and Salt Lake City. They
especially enjoyed traveling to Kauai, Tahoe, the Oregon Coast, numerous national
parks, and abroad via cruises with family and close friends.
Barbara was an avid patron of the performing arts and enjoyed many productions by
Ballet West of Salt Lake City, including an international performance at the Edinburgh
Arts Festival in Scotland. She was an active member of the Lutheran Church
throughout her life, including Mesquite Lutheran Church.
Barbara leaves behind a sister, Beverly Caraballo; two children, Janet Blake (Jonathan
Blake) and David Reed (Lisa Reed); and two granddaughters, Makenzie Foster (Grant
Foster) and Emma Blake.
Barbara never let the challenges of life shake her warm smile and cheerful attitude.
Living with MS for nearly 60 years, Barbara inspired many with her determination and
positive outlook. Barbara always made herself available to listen, give advice, or just
share a smile. She continued to share her beautiful smile in her final days with loved
ones and her dedicated care team at Mesa View Home Health and Hospice. She will
be deeply missed by those who knew her.
In lieu of flowers, please direct any charitable donations to Mesquite Lutheran
Childcare (450 Turtleback Road, Mesquite NV 89027).
