Bernadine Catherine Schneider age 100 passed away on March 15, 2012 in Las Vegs, NV. She was born on September 10, 1911 in Davenport, Iowa to Carl George Bruning and Amanda Dora Rehder Bruning. Bernadine graduated from Davenport High School at age 16. At age 18 she was selected to teach in a county school where she met her future husband. She married Carl Lee Schneider on December 31, 1933.
Bernadine moved to Las Vegas in 1962 and first worked for the atomic energy commission and then as a stock broker. She continued her education receiving a Master's Degree from UNLV in 1979 and went on to work as a Drug Abuse and Alcoholism Counselor. She was one of the original founders of Safe Nest a women's shelter and of We Care Foundation. She had a strong faith and was a founding charter member of Christ Lutheran Church in Las Vegas. She worked in real estate and operated two local businesses with her close friends and business partners Don and Margaret McConnell. She was a member of Soroptimist International of Greater Las Vegas which awarded her its Women of Distinction certificate in 1985. She also belonged to the VFW Ladies Auxiliary due to her late husband's military service during World War II.
Bernadine finally slowed down a little and moved to Boulder City in 1992. She celebrated her 100th birthday with family, friends and the wonderful staff at the Lakeview Terrace Senior Living Community in Boulder City. The family would like to thank everyone especially her lifetime friend and caregiver Joan Arasmith for what can only be described as a celebration of a lifetime.
She is survived by her four sons Lee Arthur Schneider (Lu), Peter William Schneider (Anita), James G Schneider (Rose), William T. Schneider, nine grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held Tuesday, March 20, 2012 at 12:00 noon at Christ Lutheran Church at 111 Torrey Pines Dr., Las Vegas, NV 89107. She will be laid to rest with her husband on Wednesday, March 21, 2012 at 9:20 am at the Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Boulder City.
