Bernice (Steffen) Cook passed away on July 29 at the Nathan Adelson Hospice Center of Henderson, NV at the age of 94. Bea was born in Manitowoc, WI on December 8, 1921. She was the daughter of the late William Steffen, Jr. and Sophie Duebner Steffen. At the age of three, Bea’s mom passed away and she was raised by Laura Steffen. Bea graduated from Manitowoc Lincoln high school in 1940. She moved to Washington, DC in 1941. Bea was the Assistant Chief of the Bid & Contract Section of the Bureau of Material Management for 30 years. After retirement she moved to Deltona, FL, and then to Bridgewater, VA and later Boulder City, NV.
Surviving Bernice are her daughter and husband, Sandra and Thurman Henderson of Boulder City, NV; two granddaughters, Sarah and Sharon, both of Santa Rosa, CA; 7 great-grandchildren: Lucas, Jacob, Alexander, Nicholas, Ashley, Ella, and Isaiah; her sister, Dolores Papendick of Grayling, MI; and her sister-in-law, Frances Cook currently residing in Rockingham, VA. She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Samuel London Cook; two sisters, Dorothy Bonk and Elaine Naibert both of Manitowoc, WI; and two brothers, Gerald Steffen of Neenah, WI and Lloyd Steffen of Manitowoc, WI.
Bernice was an active and faithful member of various Lutheran Churches, the latest one being Christ Lutheran in Boulder City, NV. She was a talented artist who created many oil paintings. She was also very creative and completed numerous needlepoint works of art as well as other handiwork. Bea found great joy in singing to the Lord and was the member of several choirs.
The funeral service for Bernice Cook will be on August 13 at 1:00 in the chapel of Johnson Funeral Home in Bridgewater, VA. A Memorial Service for Bernice Cook will be held at 11:00 on August 27, at Christ Lutheran Church, 1401 5th Street, NV 89005. In lieu of flowers, those desiring to do so, may make Memorials in the name of Bernice Cook, to Nathan Adelson Hospice, 4141 Swenson Street, Las Vegas, NV 89119.
