Charles Sweningsen

November 11, 1920 — November 25, 2015

Charles Anton ("Chuck") Sweningsen, age 95, of Boulder City, Nevada, passed away on November 25, 2015. He was born in Lake Forest, Illinois to Christen and Margaret Larsen Sweningsen. He was a proud graduate of the University of Illinois. He married Jean Arlene Goddard on April 24, 1944 in Long Beach, California. Together they raised their family in California, and after retirement moved to Boulder City in 2001. Charles often attended city council meetings, and sent many letters to the editor of the local newspaper. He was a World War II Army veteran, serving in the Army Corps of Engineers in both the European and Pacific theaters.

From humble beginnings, Chuck found his place in Southern California, where he rose steadily at Southern Counties Gas Company in the post-war economic boom years. Beginning as a draftsman he rose to Manager of Construction, building office buildings, pipelines and other infrastructure all over the state, bringing power and heat to the burgeoning businesses and many families.

Family was a very important part of Chuck's life. On the annual family fly fishing trips to the Sierra Nevada and beyond, the first stop was to help at the T-B, the ranch of Jean's mother, Thelma, and her husband Butch. In retirement he and Jean lived across the street from daughter Jill. He enjoyed regular visits with Jill and Joe and their children and grandchildren, and welcomed Christian and his children when they could visit from afar. He and his wife went to Denmark to visit the Sweningsen cousins. Chuck enjoyed golfing, fishing and travel, in retirement making regular summer fly fishing trips to Colorado, as well as boating trips with David to Lake Mead and the Gulf of California. Chuck was a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He was a man of faith, and despite his many accomplishments, of humility.

Chuck is survived by his two children, Christian, of Stuyvesant, New York, and Jill (Joe) Hardy of Boulder City, Nevada; 11 grandchildren - Yarrow (Beth) Sweningsen, Rebecca (Colin) Teague, Sara Sweningsen; Joe (Yvonne) Hardy, Nicole (Scott) Larson, Emily (Les) Kartchner, Leah (Ric) Casper, Spencer Hardy, Dane (Delyse) Hardy, Jack (Ken) Hardy, Ryan (Cara) Hardy; and 23 great-grandchildren - Raven Teague; Loma Jane, Sterling and Sylvan Sweningsen; Joseph and Benjamin Hardy; Hannah, Noah, Jonah, Ezra and Esther Larson; Bentley and Khiara Kartchner; Barry, Gavin, Anton, Bridgette and Vivian Casper; Hazel, Dane II, and Kenny Hardy; Graci and Liam Hardy. He is preceded in death by his son David and wife of sixty-seven years, Jean.
