George Meyer

Dr. George Raymond Meyer, age 89, Las Vegas, Nevada, died on August 27, 2012. He was born on June 4, 1923, the son of Joseph and Agnes (Van De Weghe) Meyer in Gladstone, Michigan. On December 27, 1943 he married Betty Maier, the love of his life, in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin. George grew up in Argonne, WI, where his father worked for the Soo Line Railroad, and he graduated from Argonne High School. He then went to Oshkosh State Teachers College where he met Betty at the Freshman Mixer dance. He and Betty married and moved to Minneapolis, where he completed dental school at the University of Minnesota and Betty taught elementary school. After completing his dental training, he volunteered for active duty in the U.S. Navy in 1951 during the Korean War and served as a dentist at a Navy dental office stationed in Bainbridge, Maryland. He was honorably discharged from the Navy on March 1, 1953. He started his dental practice in Oshkosh, WI, establishing his first office on the southside, then later moved his practice to downtown Oshkosh. In 1958, he moved from the downtown office to set up his private dental practice in their newly purchased home at 929 Jackson Street, Oshkosh, WI, while also raising their four children with Betty. He was a member of St. John's Catholic Church in Oshkosh for many years. On weekends they enjoyed spending time at their property in Wautoma, WI. George was a member and officer of the State and Winnebago Dental Societies, Softball Commission, Southside Businessman's Club, Ham Radio Club, Catholic War Veterans, Elks Club, Optimist Club, Knights of Columbus, Junior Chamber of Commerce, Friday Noon Club, and the American Legion. In 1953, he received the U.S. Junior Chamber of Commerce Distinguised Service Award for outstanding community service. His many interests included photography; electronics and technology, including computers, amateur TV, extra class ham radio operator building his own radios; playing several musical instruments including guitar and organ; golf and bowling; hunting; and generally mastering virtually everything he tried. He also pitched in the fastpitch softball municipal leagues including the Sunlight Dairy Team, becoming well known for his great pitching including a no hitter game. In 1984 they retired to Sebring, Florida and later moved to Las Vegas, NV, where he resided at the time of his death.

Survivors include his loving and devoted wife of 69 years, Betty Meyer and son George Meyer Jr., Las Vegas, and daughters Lezlee (Bill) Hintz, Oshkosh, Wisconsin; Dr. Luanna (Dr. Ian Evans) Meyer, Wellington, New Zealand; six grandchildren, Corey (Cyndi) Hintz, Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, and Casey (Heather) Hintz, Oshkosh, WI, Dr. Gia Voeltz (Dr. Brian DeDecker), Boulder, Colorado; Jennifer (Stephen) Anderson, Minneapolis; and Ezell Voeltz, Charleston, South Carolina; and six great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, and one daughter, Bonnie Agnes Jensen.

Cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation. Memorial service will be held on Tuesday, September 4, 2012, at 10:00 a.m. at the Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery. His family requests that any donations be made in his name on behalf of Dr. George R. Meyer to Tri-County Community Dental Clinic, an all-volunteer dental clinic providing access to quality dental health services for persons in Calumet, Outagamie, and Winnebago counties with limited incomes (www.tricountydental.org ).
