James Louis Bakies, age 90, of Las Vegas, Nevada passed away peacefully of natural causes, in his home on August 26, 2024. James was born in Carey, Ohio on September 25, 1933. After graduating from Carey High School he joined the United States Air Force in 1952 as an Aircraft Maintenance Technician and retired in 1960 while being stationed at Nellis Air Force Base in Las Vegas, Nevada. In 1961, James married the love of his life, purchased his family home, raised his family and resided in the same home for the remainder of his life. James graduated from UNLV with a bachelors degree in education and became a teacher for the Clark County School District for over 20 years. Having lost his father at a young age, James made sure he was present for every milestone in his family's lives. Choosing a career in education made it possible for James to spend every weekend, every holiday, and every summer break with his family. James was a role model and a mentor to anyone and everyone who lacked the daily guidance of a father figure. James was a man of principles and willingly gave his time to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. His ability to fix anything made his skills invaluable and many weekends were spent helping his friends and neighbors with whatever they needed. James was a loving husband, brother, father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle, cousin, friend and mentor. James is preceded in death by his parents, 8 siblings, and his oldest son, James Jr. James is survived by his wife Shirley of 63 years, his daughter Jeri Sleeper, his daughter Jamie Ostrom, his son Joe, his son Jason, his granddaughter Sabrina Ostrom, his great grandkids Kaylee and Cameron, his youngest sister Annie Draper, and many nephews, nieces, cousins, etc. James will surely be missed by all who knew him. James is now at peace in the loving embrace of our Father in heaven where we will see him again in eternity. Thank you Lord for allowing us to walk in the presence of such a man.
