Joseph Wiehl of Las Vegas, Nevada passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 28, 2024, at the Veterans Home in Boulder City, NV. He was born on October 22, 1943, in Queens, New York, the son of Joseph Wiehl and Susan Murray. At the age of 10 his family moved to Beacon, New York where he attended St. John’s Elementary / Middle school and graduated from St. Patrick’s High School in Newburgh, New York.
In 1963 he joined the Navy and spent the next 22 years serving his country. Joe earned the rank of ETCS (Electronics Technician Senior Chief). While serving in the Navy he was awarded several medals including the Navy Achievement Medal, was nominated for Sailor of the Year, and received several letters of Appreciation. His last duty station was MOTU 12 out of Mayport, Fl. After retiring from the Navy in 1983, Joe went to work for BAE Systems where he spent 25 years as a project manager in Lexington Park, MD and Charleston, SC. Upon his retirement from BAE he moved to Las Vegas.
Joe was a long-time member of the FRA (Fleet Reserve Association) out of Goose Creek, SC and member of the VFW. His favorite pass time was playing golf and billiards. He belonged to APA (American Pool League) where he and his team won First Place in the city- wide tournament in Charleston, South Carolina and went on to compete for the National championship in Las Vegas.
Joe is survived by his wife of 58 years Cheryl (Arnell), son Joseph Wiehl and his wife Karen, of Las Vegas, NV, son Mark Wiehl of Vista, CA, son Michael Wiehl and his wife Brandie of Nashville, TN. Joe has 4 grandchildren, Lauren, Ripsi, Rockwell and Joseph. He is also survived by his brother Dennis Wiehl and wife Blair of Columbia, SC, sister Dorothy Pruitt and husband David of Newburgh, NY, sister Deborah Rogers and husband Dan of Alpharetta, GA, and several nieces and nephews.
Joe was predeceased in death by his mother, father, brother Daniel, and sisters Margaret and Olive.
There will be a private burial with full Military Honors at the Veterans Cemetery in Boulder City, NV.
Donations in his honor may be made to the Disabled Veterans Association (DAV.org) or St. Jude Children’s Hospital (Stjude.org.) of which he was a proud donor.
