Boulder City

Boulder City, NV – Kurt Steven Backlund, 72, passed away peacefully on January 19, 2025, at his home in Boulder City. He was born on June 14, 1952, at St. Joseph Hospital in Denver, Colorado, to Varner A. Backlund Jr. and Shirley Jean Backlund (Green). Kurt was raised in Kiowa, Colorado, where he graduated from Kiowa High School in 1970. He spent most of his life in Colorado before moving to Boulder City, Nevada, in 2022.

Kurt worked as a heavy equipment operator, a career he took great pride in. With his genuine kindness and easygoing nature, Kurt had an innate way of making people feel at ease, drawing others to him effortlessly. In his free time, he enjoyed playing poker, watching NASCAR, and, most of all, spending time with his grandchildren. His love for family and his welcoming nature will be fondly remembered by all who knew him.

Kurt is survived by his three daughters: Kelly Backlund (Jesse Watson) of Parker, Colorado; Kendra Forney (Scott) of Boulder City, Nevada; and Keri Bell (Silvan) of Kiowa, Colorado. He leaves behind eight cherished grandchildren: Connor Watson, Sydney Backlund, Sierra Watson, Bennet Forney, Brennan Forney, Riley Bell (Lilly), Brinley Watts, and Kendree Bell. He is also survived by his three younger siblings: two sisters, Vera Kim Fleming (Randy) and Kandis Backlund, and his brother, Varner A. Backlund III (Mary).

Kurt has chosen to be cremated, with his remains to be placed with his friends Susan Johnson and Sue Young at Lake Travis in Austin, Texas, as well as with his parents in Elizabeth, Colorado. A celebration of Kurt’s life will be held in Elizabeth, Colorado, at a later date to be determined. We invite family and friends to leave condolences or share memories at www.starmortuary.com.
