Marilyn May Oaxaca, age 78, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, godmother and friend, passed away Monday, May 20, 2013 in Boulder City, NV. She was born on June 29, 1934 in Corunna, Indiana to John Ezra Poyser and Esther (Terry) Poyser. Raised in Indiana and Michigan, Marilyn enlisted in the United States Women's Army Corps and completed Medical Field Service School at Fort Sam Houston, TX, where she met her husband, Richard Oaxaca, in 1954.
Marilyn enjoyed spending time with family and friends, especially during the holidays, often making them memorable for her children when they were little by painting holiday scenes on the large picture window of the family home. Marilyn was renowned for the Christmas cookies she baked for friends and family each year, along with the tamales that the whole family gathered to make just before Christmas. Marilyn was a wonderful mother and wife, and she took great pride in caring for and raising her three children with a loving hand, and in being a grandma to her grandchildren. She enjoyed winning at competitive "sports" like bowling, bingo and video poker; she loved solving crossword puzzles and she could fashion professional-quality clothes from just a bolt of fabric, some thread and her sewing machine. Marilyn was a 45 year resident of La Puente, CA, before moving to Las Vegas in 2003. She was loved by many and she will be greatly missed.
She is survived by two daughters, Carole L. Cruz (Joe) and Cathy Oaxaca-Hoote (Jim), a son, Richard J. Oaxaca (Paulette); four grandchildren Amanda, Christine, Matthew, and Jessica; sisters Irene Grunke and Eleanor Rossman; brother Leland Poyser; Suzanne Oaxaca and many other extended family members. She is preceded in death by three brothers and her husband Richard.
Marilyn will be cremated and later interred in Riverside National Cemetery, Riverside CA, alongside her husband. Memorial service will be held at Riverside National Cemetery on Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at 12:00 noon. Family and friends can sign an online memorial guestbook at www.bouldercityfamilymortuary.com .
