Preston Keith Shopshire, 61, of Boulder City, passed away peacefully on October 27, 2024 after struggling with complications from Type 2 diabetes for several years.
Preston was born in Gardena, CA to Billy James Shopshire and Lydia Vergara Shopshire on October 11, 1963. He moved with his family to Boulder City in June 1971, attended elementary school and junior high school in Boulder City, and graduated from Boulder City High School in 1981. He studied at Santa Barbara City College after high school, and transferred to Los Angeles Trade-Technical College to study electrical engineering drafting, where he earned his Associate of Science degree in 1985.
After returning to Boulder City, Preston completed the training program and an apprenticeship with the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 501. He worked at the Showboat Hotel and Casino (later Castaways), The Riviera, and the Paris Las Vegas Hotel and Casino.
Preston was generous with his time and skills, and he was always willing to help family and friends with home projects.
An avid firearms enthusiast, he enjoyed collecting guns and target practice at the shooting range. He also enjoyed working on his cars over the years, from his 1966 VW Baja Bug, which he built in high school, to his 1977 Camaro he modified in college; he was very proud of his Guards Red C3 Corvette. Preston often attended the Silver State Classic Challenge race in Ely, and one year, he qualified and placed in the race with a restored Porsche 911.
Preston was a movie buff and was a fan of movie and television trivia. He enjoyed reading science fiction and adventure novels, and his favorite author was Kurt Vonnegut. He collected vintage vinyl records and vintage stereo equipment. On most weekends, with his friends and coworkers, Preston explored various restaurants in Las Vegas and vicinity.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and his life partner, Tasha Sanchez. He is survived by his brothers Michael and Roger, his sister Cheryl Herr (Robert), his nieces Emma and Raegan Herr, his nephew Nolan Herr, his uncles Gual Vergara and Robert Brooks, his aunts Edie Munroe (Joe) and Wilma Asher, and numerous cousins.
While Preston will be missed dearly, his family finds comfort in knowing he’s at peace.
