Retired United States Army Major Richard Edward Bennett, age 74 passed away on January 12, 2014. He was born in Oblong, IL on June 3, 1939 to Richard and Mary Bennett. He married Janine Croy, whom he met while roller skating, on July 25, 1959. He joined the United States Army and served in the Vietnam War. He was a highly decorated Major with many awards for his service. He retired from the Military in 1978 and worked for a short time as a police officer in Forest Park, GA. They moved to the Las Vegas area in 1980 where he was a Deputy Sheriff for Nye County Sheriff's Office and an Officer for Nevada State, Parole and Probation. He was a true American Hero. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police, VFW and the American Legion. When he was not saving the nation and his local community he enjoyed watching television, and bowling.
Richard is survived by his wife, Janine Bennett of Lansing, IL.; three children, Christine (Dale) Snyder of Las Vegas, NV, Daniel (Jackie) Bennett of Henderson, NV, Angela Pedroza of Dublin, OH; eight grandchildren Alexander (Meghan), Erica (Mike), Austin, Shae, Gabriela, Ryan, Dylan and McKenna; five great grandchildren Mac, Zachary, Mason, Myles, and Sophia.
Visitation and Rosary will be held on Thursday, January 16, 2014 from 7:00 to 9:00pm at Christ the King Catholic Community. Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, January 17, at 9:30 am at Christ the King Catholic Community. Military burial service will follow at 1:20 pm at the Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Boulder City, NV.
