Richard Underwood Sr

January 18, 1942 — February 26, 2013

Richard Luis Underwood Sr. age 71 of Las Vegas and Guam passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on February 26, 2013 and is now resting in the arms of Jesus. He was born in Guam on January 18, 1942 to John Joseph Underwood and Esther Flores-Taitano Underwood. He married Geraldine "Ginger" Sapp in December 1975 in Guam. Richard served honorably & proudly in the U.S. Navy and was stationed on the USS Bexar and the USS Hopewell from 1960-1968. He served in the Vietnam War and in the Cuban Missile Crisis. After the military, Richard worked for world's largest private telephone company Ma Bell in California and then later made his way back home to Guam at the invitation of Governor Carlos G. Camacho in 1971 to work for the local telephone company there now known as the Guam Telephone Authority. Richard eventually became the General Manager of GTA. He also worked in various Government of Guam positions after GTA and served as the SURUHANU of the Suruhanu's Office, Executive Director of the 20th and 21st Guam Legislature, the very first Executive Director of the TIYAN Reuse Authority and finally retired from the Guam Power Authority as the Assistant General Manager of Administration as well as Operations. When Ginger retired also from the Government of Guam, they moved to Las Vegas for that long awaited vacation. They have since lived in Las Vegas for nine years still keeping their ties and travels to their beautiful and beloved island paradise Guam and the family and friends they dearly love.

Richard was a very loving and caring husband, father and grandfather; He quickly created the baseball team the Tamuning A's to allow for his two sons and their friends to compete and play baseball locally because other teams were full. He attended and participated in his four children's school activities and served as the PTA president of Harmon Loop and LBJ Elementary School in Guam. Richard's greatest joy was his four children and doted on them by saying, "I love my children something ferocious!" Richard also never hesitated to continually remind Ginger how much he loved her. Richard loved his sports and he loved the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Los Angeles Lakers, Muhammad Ali and Manny Paquiao . Richard was always happy to get together with his Shanghai Card game friends, the Denorcey's, Salas' and the Cruz's and playing at least two rounds! Richard also loved the excitement of Guam politics and always championed the campaign of his youngest brother Robert's political endeavors. Richard also volunteered his services for the Guam Public TV, KGTF-TV12 when his wife Ginger was the general manager as well as supporting and helping with baking cookies and collecting items for donations for the St. Therese Outreach Center in Las Vegas. He was also a servant leader and greeter for the Living Water Church in Henderson and had a very strong faith that he followed. Richard loved his Jesus and his Bible studies with his church sister Beth Lakin-Ilaw and his wife Ginger. His favorite verse in the Bible is "So the last shall be first, and the first shall be last." Matthew 20:16. Lastly, Richard was a good friend and with much humor he touched our lives. He will be greatly missed by family and friends near and far.

Richard is lovingly survived by his wife of 37 years Ginger Underwood, four children and their spouses Ursula Underwood and Max Corso, Amy and Matthew Holland, Richard L. Underwood Jr. and Cassandra Armour. John and Monica Underwood; three grandchildren Bellissima 'Bailey' Underwood-Corso, Matthew Underwood-Holland, Kaya Underwood; his two sisters, Annie and Fred(dec.) Bordallo (Guam) and Carmen U. Barkley (CA); three brothers James V. Underwood (Las Vegas), John J and Linda Underwood (Philippines), Robert A. and Nerissa Underwood(Guam). He's additionally survived by his two brother-in-laws Tommy Sapp Jr. and Maria Faye Sapp (Guam) and Rodney Sapp and Vivencia Racelis (Guam) and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral Services will be held on Monday March 11, 2013 at 12:00 noon at the Boulder City Seventh-Day Adventist Church at 591 Adams Blvd Boulder City. Burial will follow the service at the Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery at 1:20 pm with military honors.
