Russell Edward Rico, 79, passed away Sunday, Nov 24, 2024, at the Southern Nevada State Veteran's Home in Boulder City, Nevada.
Russell was born on February 22, 1945 in San Francisco to James Calvin Rico and Patricia LeAlice (Hicks) Rico. He spent most of his childhood in California, returning often to live in Chowchilla, CA near his grandparents, aunt and uncles and many cousins.
One of Russell's very special places and times was spent living in Camp #5. Oregon which was part of Kinzua Corporation, a logging community in North Central Oregon. He and his sister fell in love with the beauty of the area and enjoyed the freedom of exploring the woods and meadows.
Russell attended and graduated from West Linn High School where he excelled in gymnastics. On June 12, 1962 at age 17, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, beginning his long career of serving his country.
On December 28, 1966, Russell married Penny Suzan Viegas of Fossil, Oregon at the Clackamas County Courthouse in Oregon City, Oregon.
Russell's job rating was that of Radioman and he loved the fast moving, technically challenging parts of his job, which included sending and receiving Morse Code. He advanced to Senior Chief (E-8) of which he was very proud. He was well respected by subordinates, supervisors, and by his peers. Russell's 30 year career took him to many places around the world and allowed him to serve aboard surface ships, shore duty communications stations, training schools and on fast-attack submarines. He loved the Navy and the opportunities it provided him.
Russell is survived by his wife, Penny, son, Corey Rico and wife Rachael Rico; son, Aaron Rico, daughter, Kimberley Waddell and grandson Gage, daughter-in-law Lisa Rico and granddaughter Kylie Rico; sisters Alice Marie Rico; Lori Larson, Patricia Larson, sister-in-law Paula Larson; grandchildren; Anthony Rico, Tyler Rico, Amanda Foster and husband Jared, Rachel Carlson, Sierra Rico, and Chloe Oliver and husband Trevor Oliver, as well as ten great grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
