Valbella Magee

Valbella (Val) Magee passed away on February 2, 2024, in Mesquite, Nevada.  “I was named for a mountain in Italy,” Val would tell you, and like her namesake, Monte Valbella, her presence and personality were larger than life.  

Val was born in Modena, Italy on February 21, 1929, to Silvio Spagnoli and Gina Lorenzini.  She immigrated to the United States as a young woman, arrived at Ellis Island, and settled in California—where she met Darrell.  He spoke no Italian and she spoke no English, yet they understood one another perfectly.  Together they moved to the small Eastern Oregon town of Pendleton, where she and Darrell raised four children: Bob, Mary, Mark, and Sheila.  She became a serial self-taught entrepreneur, opening and operating several businesses including a dry cleaner, a furniture store, and an ice cream shop.  In her rare moments of spare time, she honed her unique and lifelong skill of gathering samples from makeup counters, mixing them at home, and applying the results to her flawless complexion.  

She and Darrell traveled frequently, most often with their family, and they proudly achieved the highest status on Princess Cruises.  To visit her kitchen—where everything was positioned just so—one couldn’t help but behold the vast collection of coffee cups (to view, not to use!) collected during trips to faraway places.  

To Val, the most obvious perks of travel status paled in comparison to the promise of discounts on future trips.  Mysteriously, she was simultaneously glamourous—her Italian accent, impeccable makeup, and striking white hair were unmistakable—and in search of the best possible deal.  Whether haggling with street vendors in Europe, hosting a garage sale, or shopping sales at the mall, she inevitably persisted until she gained the upper hand.  

When she and Darrell retired in Mesquite, Nevada, they were far from idle: they built their home, played golf, competed in (and won) blackjack tournaments, and continued to travel the world.   Her sense of humor was infectious, and it wasn’t unusual to find her laughing, doubled over, tears running down her face, hopelessly unable to explain what was so funny.

The door to her office, which is tucked unassumingly down a hallway in her Mesquite home, opens to reveal walls covered in thousands of photographs of her family, meticulously organized and framed, taken over the span of decades.  The “Picture Room” is a repository of memories, the vastness of her collection a symbol for her enormous care for her family—in the U.S. and in Italy—all of whom she loved fiercely.  In the photos from their 77 years together, Darrell is ever by Val’s side: they lived as an inseparable team, each the other’s complement, and were unwaveringly devoted to one another.

Val was preceded in death by her parents Silvio Spagnoli and Gina Lorenzini; her brothers Iago Spagnoli and Beppe Spagnoli; and her sons Robert and Mark.

She is survived by her husband of 77 years, Darrell Magee; daughters Mary Magee (Bob Livingston) and Sheila Magee (Joel Arick); sister Sylvia Spagnoli; nephews Patrizio Spagnoli and Dario Spagnoli; grandchildren Heidi Hiskey, Corey Hiskey (Nicole), Jesse Arick (Nicole), and Kara Magee-Arick (Johnandrew Slominski); great-grandchildren Jessica Heller, Justin Heller, Torrey Newson, Dalton Hurd, Cambria Hurd, Alexandra Hiskey, Peyton Arick, Connor Arick, and Evelyn Slominski; and four great-great-grandchildren.

A celebration of Val’s life will be announced at a later date.

Valbella (Val) Magee si è spenta il 2 febbraio 2024 a Mesquite, in Nevada.  Val vi avrebbe detto: "Mi hanno dato il nome di una montagna in Italia", e come il suo omonimo, il Monte Valbella, la sua presenza e la sua personalità erano più grandi della vita.  

Val è nata in Italia il 21 febbraio 1929 da Silvio Spagnoli e Gina Lorenzini.  Emigrò negli Stati Uniti da giovane, arrivò a Ellis Island e si stabilì in California, dove incontrò Darrell.  Lui non parlava italiano e lei non parlava inglese, eppure si capivano perfettamente.   Insieme si trasferirono nella cittadina di Pendleton, nell'Oregon orientale, dove lei e Darrell crebbero quattro figli: Bob, Mary, Mark e Sheila.  Divenne un'imprenditrice autodidatta seriale, aprendo e gestendo diverse attività, tra cui una lavanderia a secco, un negozio di mobili e una gelateria.  Nei rari momenti di tempo libero, ha affinato la sua abilità unica e duratura di raccogliere campioni dai banchi di trucco, mescolarli a casa e applicare i risultati alla sua carnagione impeccabile.  

Lei e Darrell viaggiavano spesso, il più delle volte con la famiglia, e raggiungevano con orgoglio lo status più alto sulle crociere Princess.  Visitando la sua cucina, dove tutto era posizionato in modo perfetto, non si poteva fare a meno di ammirare la vasta collezione di tazze da caffè (da vedere, non da usare!) raccolte durante i viaggi in luoghi lontani.  

Per Val, i vantaggi più ovvi dello status di viaggiatrice impallidivano rispetto alla promessa di sconti su viaggi futuri.   Misteriosamente, era allo stesso tempo glamour - il suo accento italiano, il trucco impeccabile e gli straordinari capelli bianchi erano inconfondibili - e alla ricerca del miglior affare possibile.  Che si trattasse di contrattare con i venditori ambulanti in Europa, di organizzare una svendita in un garage o di fare acquisti al centro commerciale, lei insisteva inevitabilmente fino a quando non riusciva ad avere la meglio.  

Quando lei e Darrell si ritirarono a Mesquite, in Nevada, erano tutt'altro che inattivi: costruirono la loro casa, giocarono a golf, parteciparono (e vinsero) tornei di blackjack e continuarono a viaggiare per il mondo.  Il suo senso dell'umorismo era contagioso e non era insolito trovarla a ridere, piegata in due, con le lacrime che le scendevano sul viso, senza riuscire a spiegare cosa ci fosse di così divertente.

La porta del suo ufficio, che si trova in un corridoio della sua casa di Mesquite, si apre per rivelare pareti ricoperte da migliaia di fotografie della sua famiglia, meticolosamente organizzate e incorniciate, scattate nell'arco di decenni.  La "Picture Room" è un deposito di ricordi, la vastità della sua collezione è un simbolo della sua enorme cura per la sua famiglia - negli Stati Uniti e in Italia - che amava ardentemente.  Nelle foto dei loro 77 anni insieme, Darrell è sempre al fianco di Val: vivevano come una squadra inseparabile, l'uno il complemento dell'altro, ed erano incrollabilmente devoti l'uno all'altra.

Val è stata preceduta nella morte dai genitori Silvio Spagnoli e Gina Lorenzini, dai fratelli Iago Spagnoli e Beppe Spagnoli e dai figli Robert e Mark.

Le sopravvivono il marito di 77 anni, Darrell Magee; le figlie Mary Magee (Bob Livingston) e Sheila Magee (Joel Arick); la sorella Sylvia Spagnoli; i nipoti Patrizio Spagnoli e Dario Spagnoli; nipoti Heidi Hiskey, Corey Hiskey (Nicole), Jesse Arick (Nicole) e Kara Magee-Arick (Johnandrew Slominski); pronipoti Jessica Heller, Justin Heller, Torrey Newson, Dalton Hurd, Cambria Hurd, Alexandra Hiskey, Peyton Arick, Connor Arick ed Evelyn Slominski; e quattro pronipoti.
