Walter Thompson

April 27, 1928 — June 21, 2014

Walter Frederick Thompson, 86, of Las Vegas, passed away peacefully on Saturday June 21st. Born April 27, 1928 in Queens, New York, Walter lived with his young family until they moved to Las Vegas in 1967. Born to Sydney and Minnie (Hirth) Thompson, Walter was the twin brother to Marilyn (Sissy) Monohan, and the younger brother to Richard Thompson, who preceded him in death.

Walter served his country as part of the United States Army fighting in the Korean War.

After returning home from the service, he met and married his bride Dorothy DePeter, and soon began their family, living in Long Island, NY. As the story goes, their little home in Farmingdale, was getting to small for a growing family, so Walter, Dorothy and the kids packed up 1 suitcase, the family nativity set, and moved out to Las Vegas.

From the age of 14 Walter applied his labor to the craft of meat cutting, and after a short stint as a gardner in Las Vegas, he returned to meat cutting, first at Elite Market on W. Charleston, and finally with Smith's Food King, from which he retired in 1988.

Walter will always be remembered for his loving and kind nature. His love of family, friends and racquetball. He will always remember the love of his family and friends, an occasional good dance partner and an old time song or two. Some of his favorites were Oh Danny Boy, By The Light of A Silvery Moon, A Bicycle Build For Two, and I'm Leaving on a Jet Plane.

Walter was preceded in death by his parents, Sydney & Minnie, his brother Richard, and his daughter Regina Thompson Ball.

He is survived by his twin sister Marilyn Monohan, his wife for many years Dorothy, and his children Michael, Maureen, and Raymond. Walter was blessed with 6 grandchildren, Bradley, Ashleigh, Brian, Amy, Madison and Gavin, and 1 great grandchild, Dylan, all who will remember Grandpa's favorite sayings, "I love you", and " Give me a kiss".

Rest in Peace.

A funeral mass will be celebrated on Wednesday June 25, at 8:00am at St. Andrews Catholic Church in Boulder City, followed by a grave site burial at Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery, also in Boulder City.
